When BeaverTails opened a new franchise on 17th Avenue — one of Calgary’s busiest retail corridors — the build needed to move fast and land right. General contractor Velusina Design and Construction Inc. brought CCC in to handle the custom millwork. High-traffic retail, brand-specific requirements, and a firm opening date don’t leave room for error or delay.
The Scope
The work covered everything on the finish carpentry side of the fit-out: custom cabinetry sized precisely to accommodate an ice cream machine and a toppings station, shiplap installation, a butcher block countertop, and a custom feature wall aligned to BeaverTails’ brand aesthetic. Nothing was off-the-shelf — every piece was built to the specific dimensions of this location.
Partway through the build, the equipment specifications changed. The cabinetry had to be redesigned and adjusted mid-project to fit the updated layout. That kind of change on a tight timeline either costs you days or it doesn’t — depending on how your crew responds.
How We Approached It
We reviewed the plans with Velusina’s team at the start, identified the tight-tolerance areas early, and got our crew on-site quickly. When the equipment specs shifted, we assessed the changes, adapted the cabinetry design, and kept the overall schedule intact. Commercial fit-outs run on communication — we kept things direct with the GC so decisions happened fast and nothing stalled.
Every piece was fabricated to spec and installed to fit the space accurately. The butcher block countertop, shiplap walls, and feature wall all needed to work together visually and hold up in a high-volume retail environment. That’s the standard we built to.
The Result
The build was completed on schedule. All millwork — custom cabinetry, shiplap, butcher block countertop, and feature wall — was installed and ready for opening day. The space functions well, looks on-brand, and handles the daily volume of a busy 17th Avenue location.
