How Long Does an Accent Wall Take? A Calgary Carpenter Answers

It’s the first question almost everyone asks once they decide they want an accent wall — and the honest answer is: it depends on what you’re actually building.

"Accent wall" covers a lot of ground. A simple board and batten on a 12-foot bedroom wall is a different project than a full-height shiplap bedroom feature with built-in lighting. Here is a real breakdown of how long different types of projects take, and what affects the timeline.

Timeline by Project Type

Board and batten (half-wall or full-wall, single room)
Typically 1–2 days for installation, plus 1 day for paint if we’re handling the full finish. If you’re painting yourself after we leave, the carpentry alone is often done in a single day.

Wainscoting (dining room or hallway)
1–2 days for carpentry. Wainscoting involves more individual pieces — panels, rails, stiles, cap moulding — so there’s more fitting and detail work than a straightforward board and batten.

Full-wall shiplap
1–2 days depending on wall size and what’s in the way. Outlets, switches, windows, and doors all require additional fitting time. A clean, open wall installs faster than one with a lot of obstacles.

Fireplace build-out with flanking built-ins
3–5 days. This is a real project — framing, cabinet installation, surround construction, detailed trim work, paint prep and finish. Budget a full week on the calendar to be comfortable and not rushed.

Geometric or custom feature walls
2–4 days depending on complexity. Hexagonal patterns, layered moulding grids, and diagonal layouts all require more layout time and more precise cuts throughout.

What Affects the Timeline

  • Wall condition: Out-of-plumb walls, uneven surfaces, and previous texture all add time. A flat, square wall installs faster than one that needs shimming and scribing at every piece.
  • Material acclimation: We deliver materials 48–72 hours before starting so they can adjust to your home’s humidity. This is built into the schedule, not an unexpected delay.
  • Paint: If we’re handling the full scope including paint, add at least one day. If you’re painting yourself after we’re done, we leave clean, primed surfaces ready to go.
  • Access and prep: Having the wall cleared and furniture moved before we arrive speeds things up significantly on day one.

What About the Wait to Book?

The on-site timeline and the booking timeline are two different things. In spring and fall — Calgary’s busiest renovation seasons — we are typically booked out 4–8 weeks. The project itself might take 2 days, but securing your spot on the schedule takes planning ahead.

If you have a target date in mind, start the conversation early. We would rather give you an honest timeline than squeeze a project into a window that doesn’t set it up for the best result.
