How a Marda Loop Couple Transformed Their Living Room With a Custom Fireplace Build-Out

When a Marda Loop couple reached out to Calgary Custom Concepts last fall, their living room had a fireplace that nobody really looked at. It worked fine — but it sat in a plain drywall surround with no real presence, no shelving, and nothing to anchor the room.

They wanted something that felt intentional. A fireplace wall that made you stop when you walked in — built-in shelves on either side, clean millwork framing the box, and a design that worked with their mid-century furniture without competing with it.

What the Project Involved

The scope was broader than a simple surround swap. We built a full-height fireplace feature wall that included:

  • Custom MDF surround with clean profiled casing
  • Floor-to-ceiling built-in shelving units flanking the fireplace
  • Integrated cable management for the TV above the mantel
  • Painted finish in Benjamin Moore White Dove — seamless with the existing trim

The existing fireplace box stayed put. We worked around it, building the surround and millwork to frame it properly — no gas line changes, no tile rework. The transformation came entirely from the carpentry.

From demo to final paint touch-up, the project ran about four days. Two days of framing and cabinet installation, one day of detailed trim work, and one day for paint prep and finishing.

The Result

The couple’s main feedback: the room finally had a purpose. The fireplace became the anchor it always should have been, and the built-in shelves gave them somewhere to display the things that matter — books, art, a few plants — without it looking cluttered.

The before was a functional room that could have been anyone’s. The after was theirs.

This kind of project — a fireplace build-out with flanking built-ins — is one of the most impactful things you can do in a living room without moving walls or changing your floor plan. It adds architectural weight, storage, and a clear focal point all in one.

Is a Fireplace Build-Out Right for Your Home?

It’s a strong fit if you have an existing fireplace that feels underwhelming, or if you’ve always wanted built-ins but didn’t know how to incorporate them naturally. A fireplace wall gives you a logical starting point — symmetry, balance, and a reason for the shelving to be there.

It also works well in rooms where you want to add character without a full renovation. The drywall stays, the fireplace stays, but the whole room reads differently.
